Message from the CEO and the Chair of the Board of Directors
Over 400 million journeys with the STIB
Having just celebrated its 70 th anniversary, STIB is more than ever the driving force behind mobility in Brussels. In 2024, the milestone of 400 million journeys was surpassed. Over the past 10 years, despite the COVID-19 period, ridership on buses, trams, and metro services has grown by nearly 60%, while seat-kilometres have almost doubled.
These strong results come with numerous challenges. The city is evolving, travel habits are changing, new technologies present opportunities that must be considered, and budgetary constraints are tightening. STIB is adapting and investing in this transformation by modernising its network and continuously innovating to prioritise efficiency for the greatest number of people.
In 2024, new trams and metro trains joined the fleet, providing greater comfort for passengers. The first of a series of more than 100 fully electric standard and articulated buses arrived in Brussels. The new tram line 10 now connects Churchill in the south to the Military Hospital in Neder-Over- Heembeek in the north. The new ’CBTC’ metro signalling system is being installed on metro lines 1 and 5, increasing network capacity, while construction works on the M3 metro line continue around Brussels South Station. These projects, alongside many others, demonstrate STIB’s commitment to its passengers, as well as to the city of Brussels and its residents.
This 2024 Activity Report highlights the work accomplished while also acknowledging the challenges ahead. Together, we aim to continue shaping the future of mobility—a mobility that connects people, respects the environment, and contributes to the social, economic, and cultural dynamism of our capital.
